Computational Tools for Evaluating the Influence of Aortic Wave Reflections on Left Ventricular Function
Pressure wave reflections from the arterial tree return to the left ventricle (LV) during late systole in aging arteries. Such reflections may augment left ventricular pressures and lead to diminished LV function. Mathematical quantification of this phenomenon is essential for developing a more complete understanding of LV afterload. Here, we develop a computational model system that couples a low-order model of the LV to a one-dimensional model of the aorta. This simplified system provides insight into the interaction mechanisms with few confounding factors. We conclude by showing preliminary model findings.
