Mathematical Theory of Harmony and Dissonance

When

1 p.m., Sept. 10, 2021

The study of harmony and dissonance is the study of what makes certain musical chords and progressions sound more or less pleasant to the human ear. Since the time of Pythagoras people have been conjecturing different rules of harmony based on the ratios of note frequencies. We will explore this theory and see how mathematicians and music theorists have couched it in mathematics over the centuries. This talk will include audio examples to help demonstrate these concepts, and will conclude with a brief discussion on some interesting problems regarding the mathematical theory of harmony and dissonance.
