Quantitative Biology Colloquium

Encoding and Decoding of Transcription Factor Dynamics by Biological Systems Part II

When

4 p.m., Dec. 3, 2019

I will discuss two other transcription factors: Crz1 and Msn2 in budding yeast and compare/contrast them with p53. Crz1 is activated by an increase in calcium concentration and is regulated by frequency modulation (FM); the higher the concentration of calcium the faster the frequency of Crz1 activation. Msn2 is activated by cellular stress (Hydrogen Peroxide, Salt Stress and low glucose) and is regulated by frequency modulation but also amplitude and duration modulation (AM and DM respectively). I will discuss the differences in each mode of regulation and speculate on why some transcription factors employ FM, AM or DM regulation.
