AMP-Activated Protein Kinase and Estrogen-Dependent Mechanisms underlying Increased Susceptibility to Cardiovascular Disease during Menopause

Utilizing the VCD model of menopause we chemically induced menopause in 2- month old female mice, we conducted a proteome analysis of the transition of the heart into menopause. From a proteomic standpoint, we were able to identify estrogen-dependent metabolic pathways such as AMPK signaling, and myosin light chain -dependent contraction of cardiac proteins, which together contribute to a female's rapid progression to heart failure after the onset of menopause. Additionally, we also performed a transcriptome analysis, and our findings aligned to the proteome.
