Title:          Introduction to the Mori-Zwanzig Formalism

Abstract:     The Mori-Zwanzig Formalism is a tool developed in the field of statistical mechanics to derive approximate equations for the dynamics of reduced sets of variables when studying a system of many variables. Outside of statistical mechanics, it has been applied to find reduced order models and to perform optimal prediction when there is uncertainty in the measurement of initial conditions.

In this presentation we will provide motivation for the Mori-Zwanzig Formalism and then show how it can be used to derive a reduced order model of a simple system.
