Title:             Heisenberg Model and Quantum Group Symmetry

Abstract:     In this talk I’ll introduce the Heisenberg spin chain, a mathematical model for magnetism and an exactly solvable system in quantum statistical mechanics. I’ll discuss the physical background to motivate this model and some of the techniques used to analyze it. In particular, symmetries in the Heisenberg XXZ model’s spectrum suggest a more algebraic approach. This gives rise to the technique of quantum group symmetry.
