Title: Going From Mathematics to Industry: Reflections on my Still-Not-Over Journey
Abstract: I graduated from the University of Arizona with a PhD in Applied Mathematics in 2005. Over the past twenty years, most of my career has been in research and innovation for the Oil & Gas industry, both in engineering and geoscience.
During the talk, I will go through the path that took me from being sure about a career in aerospace, looking up in the air, to one looking down at subsurface rock and geofluids, to one doing business development in fluid control.
My talk will emphasize important lessons that I learned (by succeeding or failing) at each phase in my career and how my mathematical background together with the capacity to enjoy learning new topics and interchange ideas have been fundamental to keeping an enjoyable career.
I will also offer advice based on my own experience. I will discuss the different types of industry, what it expects from mathematicians, what mathematicians typically expect from industry, how the difference in these expectations shapes your career, and how being open to new opportunities takes you into a self-discovering journey.
