Abstract: Nonlinear Waves: (1) Our Department’s Role in Shaping the Theory, (2) Real-World Applications

From the mid-1970s to the late 1980s, mathematics underwent major breakthroughs in understanding the fundamentals of nonlinear processes, their mathematical models, and the development of analytical methods for studying them. Members of our department made significant contributions to advancing this field, which I will highlight in the first part of the talk. The second part will focus on various applications — from ocean waves to nanophotonics — that have been developed and continue to be explored at the University of Arizona.
