Title: How Raytheon Tames, sometimes, Really Large Solution Spaces

Abstract: Raytheon uses Models and Simulations (M&S) at all levels of abstraction as a substantial part of its design process.  It is increasingly leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques to inform traditional M&S-centric Operations Research (OR) and product development.  Raytheon also uses M&S techniques to support data generation for AI/ML decision aids.  The ‘solution space’ for each M&S use case is the number of mission scenarios to be sampled as part of the Design of Experiments (DOE).  The solution space size for many evolving requirements can be very large, much larger than the estimated number of atoms in the universe (10^80).    This presentation will outline at a high conceptual level several techniques Raytheon employs to ‘tame’ this very large solution space, to make engineering processes tractable.
